WEEK 4 of Web 2.O - RSS Feeds

#8

So this week I learnt all about RSS feeds which was quite helpful because I had never heard of them before. RSS feeds are really great because they mean you only need to go to one place to locate the latest articles, news and information from your favourite websites. This is good for my work at the library because I subscribed to a number of fiction review sites so I can keep up with all the lastest books that have come out.

I set up a bloglines account and subscribed to some of my friends and co-workers blogs. I also subscribed to the readers club - short stories RSS feed as well as the New York Times review of books so that should keep me busy. I also subscribed to the Web 2.0 RSS feed and the unshelved cartoon feed. Even though the idea is great I actually found bloglines quite annoying because I constantly have web access problems when using it. I don't know whether this is to do with the library internet or with the site itself but I noticed a lot of my co-workers having the same problem. Bummer.

My public bloglines URL is http://www.bloglines.com/public/gwenorcliffe

This RSS technology could be used at the library to distribute news of what events are on and to keep people up to date with what new books are available at the library. There could be a librarians choice RSS feed for example.

Week Three of Web 2.0

VIMEO
Something technology related which interests me is the social networking site Vimeo. (http://www.vimeo.com/) This social networking site is based around video. Users create a profile and upload videos that they have made. Users can comment on each others videos and share them too. The difference between Vimeo and Youtube is that Vimeo only allows users to upload content that they have made themselves.

This week I also set up a flicker account and uploaded some photos to it. It is a really great way to share photos with my friends and family. I played around making some mashups too. Cool!
